Scott Peterson, a now retired California Highway Patrol officer, testified in court about the speed of Dungan’s vehicle as it reached impact, as well as the amount of force that affected the victims’ vehicle.
Evidence extracted from the event data recorder in Dungan’s car showed that he was traveling 119 mph at the point of impact, Peterson said.
Peterson also conducted control speed tests on the same stretch of Highway 154 that Dungan had driven the day of the collision. Peterson said he drove a CHP patrol car similar to the Camaro Dungan was driving during the crash.
During the four control tests, Peterson said he reached a maximum speed of 114 mph. He said he believed driving any faster would be unsafe to do on that stretch of highway.
