Absolutely Rigged Online Poker by Martin Fromage
Absolutely Rigged Online Poker
There are a lot of rumors floating around on poker forums and discussion boards about the Absolute Poker scandal.
Nobody knows exactly what has happened, but I'll try to summarize the accusations against Absolute Poker.
Mark Seif -- Rumors about Cheating
There have been rumors about players cheating at Absolute Poker for quite some time; this is, however, nothing unique for this site.
Online texas holdem rooms are almost daily accused of being rigged.
One of the accused players is Mark Seif, a two time WSOP bracelet who is sponsored by Absolute Poker.
On February 15 2006, the alias "Icfishes" writes on a poker forum about a session against Mark Seif.
They played $75/$150
no limit texas holdem heads-up and Seif was losing quite a lot.
Suddenly Seif wrote in the chat: "one minute, punk", and when he returned he stated: "I'm ready to take you down".
15 minutes later, Seif was up $12 k.
Along the way he made quite a few questionable moves, like folding out of turn when his opponent flopped full house etc.
POTRIPPER -- He Definitely Cheated
To make a long story short: In September, the alias POTRIPPER entered a $1,000 multi-table tournament.
He played every hand pre-flop (with only a few exceptions); and after the flop, he never made a single mistake.
He bluffed several players on many occasions and never called on the river (he raised with the best hand and folded when he was behind.)
It looked like he could
play texas holdem perfectly.
POTRIPPER made tons of impossible plays.
He, for instance, called an all-in with T9 when the board showed 4 K K 7.
By the way, his opponent -- who was second in chips at the time -- held 92.
Everyone who has seen this tournament (available on YouTube)
can see that POTRIPPER is cheating.
There's no question about that.
The Excel Document Revealed the Truth
Marco Johnsson, who finished second in the tournament, felt that something was wrong, contacted Absolute Poker's support and demanded the
complete hand history.
He received an Excel-document, which consisted of 65,000 lines.
He didn't bother to read it.
Meanwhile, poker forums were boiling.
Something was rotten in Absolute Poker land.
Absolute Poker, on the other hand, just said:
"The result of our investigation is that we found no evidence that any of Absolute Poker's redundant and varying levels of game client
security were compromised."
After a while, Marco Johnsson sent the Excel document to Jared "TheWaccoKid" Hamby who realized that it contained every single tournament
participant's hole cards, and came to the conclusion that POTRIPPER had been cheating.
But how was that possible?
Account363 Is the Key
The Excel document shows that the entire tournament was monitored by a "player" called "account363".
Many think that this is an account that was created when Absolute Poker developed the software and is a super-account that views
all players' hole cards.
Account363 is obviously blocked from being used, but it can still be open on another computer.
So POTRIPPER could watch his opponent's hole cards while he was playing.
And he must have had access to account363, there’s no doubt about that.
By the way, POTRIPPER -- who played perfect poker that time -- previously only participated in one tournament.
The buy-in was $20, and he -- not very surprisingly -- won the event too.
