Texas Holdem Software - Poker Bots A couple of years ago the poker world was shocked when the well known news site WIRED published an article about poker bots. According to the article the program WinHoldEm could play texas hold em on a variety of sites and win against human opponents. But there is another, more frightening, aspect of WinHoldEm, you can use the program to collude with other owners of the program by seeing their hole cards, and vice versa. Collusion anybody? This is of course something that honest poker players should be aware of when they play texas holdem online. Fortunately, all online poker sites have banned the use of robots and have developed methods to detect the use of poker bots; so the risk is nowadays quite low when you play Texas holdem. Apart from bots there are nowadays a variety of texas holdem software that helps the player, such as programs that keep tracks of your earnings. Developing a winning poker bot is no easy task but the GAMES group in the University of Alberta has undergone the task and has after a decade of development come up with VEX. A program that uses opponent modeling to beat real poker players in heads-up games by exploiting weaknesses in their opponents game. But developing such a program is no easy task since the Artificial Intelligence (AI) has to be very sophisticated. One of the few ways of developing such an advanced AI is to use neural networks. A neural network is basically a number of processors that are given tasks, for instance to play a hand in poker or making a move in chess. Then the processors taking good decisions are given a bigger part of the network and the processors taking bad decisions gets less part of the overall computing power. This way the programmers can see which instructions works and which don't. Of course, this is only a very basic description of a very complex and time consuming task but should be enough to give you a general idea of how it is done.
