A Review of Doyle Brunson's "Super System: A Course in Power Poker" by Eric Nevlys

In the wide array of books published about poker, there is a short list of classics that must be read by any serious student of the game. And while poker analysts around the globe might sit around arguing about precisely which titles should comprise an "all time greatest" list, there can be no argument about the book that resides at the top of the heap. No matter how many years pass since its original publication, this tome of wisdom remains impervious to all pretenders to its throne. You can think of it as the "War and Peace" of poker literature - but its real title is "Super System: A Course in Power Poker" and the author is a fellow by the name of Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson.

Though the list of great poker champions is populated by skilled players from all walks of life, few command the kind of automatic respect Brunson has earned over the course of his amazingly long and colorful career that started long before the online casino was invented. With four swaggering decades of domination under his belt, he is still a fixture on televised competitions and someone to whom younger players bow with deference. And while Doyle would never harbor the pretense to call himself a serious author, his book "Super System: A Course in Power Poker" will continue to be studied and discussed for as long as people are playing the game of poker.

When it was published for the first time in 1979, "Super System: A Course in Power Poker" sent shock waves throughout the poker world. Never had such a comprehensive, insightful, and brutally frank book ever been written on the subject. Nor had a book ever been written by a poker player of Brunson’s stature. The fact that Texas Dolly was the first player ever to win $1 million in poker tournaments ranks high among his list of accomplishments but it is hardly the keynote of his entire career. The ten World Series of Poker bracelets in his possession are equally impressive in the eyes of most. Super System was an eye-opener to many, and Brunson explained that poker isn’t a game of chance like roulette and blackjack and that a player actually can adapt a winning strategy.

Those who have never read "Super System: A Course in Power Poker" really owe it to themselves to become familiar with the deep veins of wisdom running through the pages of this book. Hot, flash-in-the pan strategies come and go (usually a half-dozen or so per year) but Brunson’s patented Super System continues to draw admiration from the best poker players in the world almost three decades after it was unveiled.

This book is a true collector’s edition, featuring a foreword by Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder and a preface by Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston. On each and every page you will find something of value, bits of insight and information that collectively add up to a system that is every bit as powerful as its name would suggest. "Super System: A Course in Power Poker" is a true classic for the ages, and a book that must not only be read but deeply appreciated as a gift to the world from a genuine living poker legend. Long may Doyle reign.
