However, many players are in the category of those who think they are pretty good. The gap between the skill level of players who think they are good at no limit Texas holdem and the skill level these players actually possess is where professionals make all their money. The wonderful thing about no limit Texas holdem poker for the skilled player is that it is frighteningly easy to deceive yourself as to the quality of your play. Big losses can be attributed to luck and big wins to skill with only very slight adjustments to your memory or analysis. So how good is your no limit Texas holdem? There are a number of ways you can assess this. Win Rate This seems like an obvious one, but for most players, it is not. It is not enough to remember the times you won big pots and assume you are a winning player. It is easy to delude yourself about how much you win or lose. To truly know your win rate, you must keep accurate records of the number of hours you played each session and how much you won or lost over that session. You cannot add or subtract for hands you should have won, or bad beats that you feel \“shouldn’t count.\” You must record everything. Tabulating results after one or two sessions doesn’t work either. Outside Assessment Your best way to improve is to have a network of players who you can discuss your play with. It is also preferable that these players have some skill themselves. If you do not have such a group, there are online poker forums where you can bounce ideas off other players and hear their assessments of how you played a particular hand. You do not have to take everyone’s suggestions at face value, but you must be open minded as to the possibility that someone may have found a better way to play a particular hand than you might have. Subjective Assessment You should always be analyzing your own game. After a losing session, ask yourself if you could have played the losing hands any differently. Sometimes you do just get unlucky in poker, but surprisingly often you will discover there is something you could have done to avoid or minimize the effects of a losing hand.
